PERIDOT WIN STREET DANCE XXL UK CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011 AT SOUTHBANK CENTRE
After three years as runners up, South London’s Peridot have finally become the 16th winners of the coveted Street Dance XXL UK Championships, which took place this Sunday 17 July 2011 at Southbank Centre.
Fighting off fierce competition from London rivals Abyss, who were semi-finalists on this year’s Britain’s Got Talent and tipped to win the title; audience favourites break-dance sensations Metamorphoz from France; and Essex rivals Karizma Krew, Peridot took the trophy.
The ten members of Periodot will now go on to represent Britain in a UK vs. USA showdown in New York next week.
This year 30 groups competed in the Street Dance XXL UK Championships final, which took place at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall for the first time for Intelligent Movement – a weekend celebrating hip-hop culture as part of the 60thanniversary Festival of Britain celebrations with MasterCard.
The Street Dance XXL UK Championships are at the forefront of the street dance explosion and have been providing a launching pad for dance troupes such as Flawless for 16 years.
Channel 4 will broadcast a documentary following Peridot on their journey to the finals and to America as part of their 10-day Street Summer season, which will broadcast in August this year.
Since it began as an amateur venture in a secondary school hall in Battersea in 1995, the Street Dance XXL UK Championships has gone on to inspire a nation of dancers to emerge from their bedrooms and onto the stage and spawned the number one box office hit movie StreetDance 3D, last year’s fairly low-budget British made movie which beat both Robin Hoodand Prince of Persia at the box office.
Further contributing to the street dance explosion, championships produced by CBBCand Sky will also air for the first time this year.
Note, Street Dance XXL UK Championships 2011 in association with Kiss is part of: Intelligent Movement / Channel 4 "Street Summer" / Festival of Britain.
